Federal Connectivity

The ApeniMED Platform is a proven healthcare interoperability connectivity solution stack, enabling the interoperable exchange of clinical and administrative data between disparate trading partners and systems. The ApeniMED Platform includes core, standards-based technologies such as Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) Exchange (NHIN CONNECT) and the Direct Project for connectivity between healthcare organizations and Federal Agencies. As the nation’s foremost NHIN expert, ApeniMED is uniquely positioned in the healthcare interoperability marketplace with unparalleled NHIN experience and multiple NHIN CONNECT and Direct projects supported via the ApeniMED Platform.

ApeniMED has been actively involved in the NHIN workgroups and implementation projects since the trial implementations of NHIN in 2008. As the NHIN Direct Project (Direct) and NHIN Exchange (CONNECT) have become the nation’s backbone for healthcare data exchange, ApeniMED has the expertise and interoperable ApeniMED Platform to connect healthcare trading partners locally, regionally, and nationally. Our specialized expertise includes:

  • One of a few, select vendors to successfully deploy multiple, fully compliant NHIN Gateways, based on the CONNECT standards.
  • Listed as an official NHIN CONNECT compliant partner and adopter on the NHIN CONNECT website.
  • Named to the NHIN Specification Factory and the NHIN Direct Implementation and Specification Team and Workgroup.

Use-Cases & Benefits

ApeniMED has provided NHIN connectivity to automate information exchange with the United States Social Security Administration (SSA) for eligibility verification and summary of care reporting, and with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for RAC audits: Click here to learn more about the ApeniMED esMD Service.  ApeniMED is also working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as well as the Department of Defense (DoD) and Veterans Administration (VA) on NHIN-based interoperability and connectivity projects.

Interoperable connectivity creates administrative efficiencies via automated information exchange of clinical and administrative information, typically exchanged manually with hard copies. Stakeholders have proven to increase workflow efficiencies, increase the quality of care, and save time and money by reducing the need for manually printing, shipping, or copying paper records.

Case Study: HIE-Bridge and NHIN

HIE-Bridge is a Minnesota-based Health Information Exchange (HIE) leading the region in Federal Agency connectivity using the ApeniMED Platform, and the first Health Information Organization (HIO) certified by the State of Minnesota (read press release). Recently, ApeniMED has successfully completed testing to connect HIE-Bridge to the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) under the SSA MEGAHIT program. This project connected HIE-Bridge to the SSA for bi-directional information exchange, submitting a Continuity of Care Document (CCD) and receiving an acknowledgement. Bi-directional exchange with the Social Security Administration will allow for automated eligibility verification, helping to reduce the timeframe for eligibility determination from over a year to just a few weeks.
